Fundamentals In Yoga Asana

I’m so looking forward to tomorrows fundamentals of Yoga Asana class in Dun Laoghaire. There is nothing like the openness and willingness of newbies to stir the fire of my own practice. Really excited!!

Heres a few tips too start us off;

  1. Yoga Breath; Always through your nose. Nasal breathing is healthier than mouth breathing for several reason. Your lungs take oxygen from the air you breathe and most of this happens during exhalation. The nose cavity is smaller than the mouth and so less air is expelled allowing more time for the lungs to assimilate the oxygen.
  2. Secondly the air gets cleaned by the nasal hairs as it enters the body, purifying it for assimilation. Another reason is that your nose makes 2 pints of mucous daily, if this is not cleared properly it can lead to stagnant mucous and from there infections
  1. It is advised to abstain from eating about 1-3 hours before your practice. Drinking only small amounts of water before practice and drinking little or nothing during your practice. Allow the body to move the hormones through the practice and not get disturbed by the water.
  1. Yoga benefits all, however only when practiced carefully. Menstruation, pregnancy, high blood pressure and injuries to the knees, shoulders, and neck are all conditions where certain postures must be avoided and special care must be taken in all postures. If you have any medical condition, you should check with your health care professional before starting a yoga practice, and always let your teacher know. A good teacher will be able to offer variations.


  1. Always listen to your own body. Teachers are there to guide you and help but they don’t live in your body. When it feels like you’ve moved to far then just back up or rest. Don’t look at the yogi on the next mat they’ve had different experiences and we all have very different bodies.


  1. Yoga practice is exactly that a practice. There will never be a Yoga perfection. The hardest challenge is to show up onto your mat. Whether that’s daily (where you get the maximum benefits) or weekly build a routine, but each time you get onto the mat you’ll get deeper into the pose, even if that’s not physically but rather mentally.


  1. The Yoga postures are a step towards the balance of the mind, body and spirit. Taking the step towards a regular practice could open you up into a world of good health and happiness!
